Kawau Island House,
Little Vivian Bay

Perched on a clifftop above Little Vivian Bay, this serene retreat by Novak+Middleton nestles into the surrounding kānuka forest. Inspired by mid-century modernism and honouring a family legacy — built on the site of the owner’s grandfather’s original bach — the home was recognised in the 2025 NZIA Auckland Architecture Awards (Housing category).

Moth Light collaborated with the architects to create a lighting scheme that complements the design while remaining unobtrusive to the sweeping coastal views. Over the kitchen island, the sculptural lines of Flat Freddie 30 provide both a focal point and practical illumination for daily life. Recessed Where’s Ben 14 luminaires are integrated into the beams, to provide ample illumination while highlighting the timber detailing and drawing the eye outward to the horizon. Outside, Flat Freddie 14 luminaires are tucked discreetly into the soffit, carrying the sense of warmth and cohesion from indoors to out.

The result is an atmosphere that supports the architecture and frames the extraordinary setting.
