He Rerenga Inanga Bridge,
Napier

The enhancement project, 'He Rerenga Inanga Bridge' is a shared walkway/cycleway codesigned by Napier City Council and Waka Kotahi, to provide pedestrian access between two streets in an industrial area.

Efficient lighting was essential as there wasn’t any other lighting in close proximity. Angle Andy 25 helped to push the lighting out and around the bridge and surrounding areas and could be located discretely within the bridge structure.

As part of the consultation process, the local community and iwi identified the inanga (a type of fish) which live in the drain and agreed, in order to give the project local significance, that the pathway would carry the name of ‘He Rerenga Inanga’ or ‘a waterway of the inanga’.

The bridge design includes corten steel panels on the approaches of the bridge to capture the industrial land use, and eels to represent the inanga.
