Moth Light is proud to announce that the Richie Rail Emergency System has been recognised with top honours at the IES Lighting Awards, winning the Innovation Award of Excellence for its engineered approach to emergency lighting in handrails.

The judges highlighted the Richie Rail Emergency System as a fully engineered and architecturally elegant emergency lighting solution, noting:

“The product design provides a fully engineered emergency lighting solution for stairs, integrated into the handrail system. We thought it was a great solution where architectural aesthetics are a priority.”

What Sets the Richie Rail Emergency System Apart

The Richie Rail Emergency System is a unique continuous emergency lighting solution integrated directly into illuminated handrails. Unlike traditional emergency lights, this system combines normal and emergency lighting circuits within the rail itself to provide safe navigational lighting during power outages — ideal for stairways, ramps and egress routes where both design and safety matter.

  • Dual-circuit LED strip: Primary lighting at ~1080 lumens per metre and an emergency circuit at ~180 lumens per metre.

  • Compliant to AS/NZS2293 standards when used with an appropriately certified emergency battery pack.

  • Designed for use with multiple Richie Rail models (17, 20, and 26), providing flexibility across architectural and commercial projects.

This blend of safety, aesthetics and compliance has helped Richie Rail gain traction in commercial projects across New Zealand.

Why the Award Matters

Winning the Innovation Award of Excellence at the IES Lighting Awards recognises not just product performance but real world design thinking — solving a long-standing challenge in emergency wayfinding lighting without compromising architectural intent.

By embedding emergency lighting directly into handrails, the Richie Rail system supports safer egress and wayfinding in public, commercial, and residential buildings — a standout benefit for designers, engineers and building owners alike.
