Good uplighting is about the ceiling it reveals, the volume it gives back to the room and the calm it creates by keeping the brightest source out of view.
The ceiling becomes the luminaire
Well designed uplighting does not read as a fitting. It reads as a brighter ceiling, a deeper room and a more comfortable contrast ratio. Instead of aiming a bright source into the field of view, light is directed onto a surface and returned to the space as a broad ambient layer.
At Moth Light, we treat uplight as an architectural layer. The profile, optics and driver matter, but the final effect is determined just as much by the surface, the offset and the section detail.
Integrated linear uplighting: Where’s Ben 14
Where’s Ben 14 is an asymmetric profile for controlled wall, ceiling and floor washing. At Kawau Island House, it is built into the expressed beams so long lines of warm light reveal the timber ceiling without competing with the architecture.
The product and its dimensions
Where’s Ben 14 can be surface-mounted or recessed, with a trimless recessing kit and customised lengths and configurations. It uses a 24 V DC remote driver and can be paired with Casambi, DALI, 0–10 V or DMX control. It is suitable for interior or exterior use when specified with the appropriate IP-rated LED strip.
Concealed ledge uplighting: Dado Dave 20
Where the architecture already creates a ledge, bulkhead or high-level shelf, Dado Dave 20 produces a controlled asymmetric wash from a very small profile. The product disappears into the detail and lets the illuminated surface carry the room.
The product and its dimensions
Dado Dave 20 measures 49.85 x 20 mm and is available with opal, clear or prismatic diffuser options. It delivers up to 2650 lm/m source output for interior ledges and bulkheads, using a 24 V DC remote driver with multiple dimming and control options.
Wall-mounted indirect uplighting: Watts Up 240 and 480
Watts Up brings the same indirect-lighting principle to a visible wall-mounted family. The slim extrusion is deliberate and discreet, throwing light upward while keeping the brightest source below the eye line.
Watts Up 240 suits compact rooms and hallways, with up to 1510 lm delivered light. Watts Up 480 suits living rooms, meeting spaces and taller volumes, with up to 4030 lm delivered light. Both are interior luminaires using 24 V DC remote drivers.
Four decisions to make early
1. Position
Check the offset from the wall or ceiling, the reveal depth and every likely viewing angle.
2. Output
Match lumens and spacing to the height, surface and ambient-light target. More output is not automatically better.
3. Colour and control
Coordinate colour temperature with the material palette and specify dimming early enough for the control system.
4. Access
Allow for driver ventilation, cable routes, commissioning and future maintenance.
